IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #4

I did a research on the good websites for effective literacy and was able to find one that interests me. I found a side called Busy Teacher (https://busyteacher.org/).
The Busy Teacher website is another website that will help both the teacher and the students. Just below the address bar, you will find five headings. They are worksheets, articles, posters, books, and more.
If you click on the worksheets, there are a lot of worksheets that teachers can use in the classroom to help students to learn to read. Under the same heading, there is a list of things that teachers can click to find worksheets for grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, writing, and pronunciation. At the same time, teachers will have the opportunity to select the level of the worksheet they selected. It ahs beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate, and exam level. As I was going through the worksheets, I found some very interesting worksheets that really make me wanted to go the classrooms again. I found one on the vocabulary, it was about emotions. I really like the worksheets since it gave an emotion and listed four choices that would create that specific emotion. I really like that worksheet.
Under the article heading, teachers can find a lot of articles that would really interest students to read and to learn from. Some of the articles I went through talks about how to greet others especially during these holidays since we are celebrating Christmas and welcoming the new year, 2019. Another thing that really interests me under the article is the 10 habits of a good students. The habits describe how a student can be a good student. Just reading these articles will really help students to improve their vocabulary, grammar, and most importantly, their reading comprehension skills.
As for the heading on poster, there are a lot of different posters that would really capture the students' attention when they will be given these posters. The posters have bright colors and important notes and information on them. Students will really like looks at these posters. And while they will be looking at these beautiful posters, they would probably be reading some of the information found on the posters. By doing this, they will learn a lot of things themselves. When students read a text that comes along with pictures and images, students will understand and can relate the text to themselves as they go through. These posters are very nice and they will really capture the attention of the students.
Under the heading "more", there are also good things that teachers can use to help students. One might find the followings under the heading "more": Worksheet for seasons, 600 Creative Writing Prompt, Warmers, Fillers & Ice-breakers, Coloring pages to print, Flashcards, Classroom Management Worksheets, and Emergency Worksheets. I believe that all these worksheets and writing prompts will really helpful for students.
Another reason I like the Busy Teacher is that it has audios and videos that students will be listening to or watching while they complete an assignment given. This site in a good site for both the teacher and the students.

The starfall website ( http://more.starfall.com/) is a program service of Starfall Education Foundation, a publicly supported nonprofit organization, 501(c)(3). Starfall is a children's website that teaches basic English reading and writing skills. The main demographic is preschoolers, and kindergarteners. The website opened in September of 2002 as a free public service and social enterprise supported by the Polis-Schutz family. On July 1, 2015, the Polis-Schutz family donated their full interest in Starfall to the  Starfall Education Foundation. The Starfall program has a Store, Parent-Teacher Center, and foundation.
The main goal of Starfall is to teach student to be able to read. Starfall has been teaching children to read with phonics for well over a decade. Our systematic approach, in conjunction with audiovisual interactivity, is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, homeschool, and English language development (ELD, ELL, ESL). Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children.
Starfall has four reading levels to teach children how to read. The levels, in order from the most basic to the most advanced are: "learning ABCs", "early beginning reading", "intermediate beginning reading", and "advanced beginning reading". The first level teaches preschoolers about the ABCs. At this level, the website provides learners with all the letters of the alphabet in the upper case form and in the lower case form. When the learners see words appear on the screen, they hear the sounds of all the letters that compose a word. In the early beginning level, learners create words through the addition of consonants to different word family. The letters in every word are highlighted while they are read to the learner.  In the intermediate beginning reading level, readers can bring the books they will read to life before they read them. The learner can read about eminent artists and magic tricks. In the advanced beginning reading level, children can read a variety of books, including nonfiction books, bird riddles, Chinese fables, and comics.
The program expands the free content that teachers already enjoy to include delightfully animated songs, mathematics, and reading activities spanning pre-k to 2nd grade. Children will have fun learning essential reading and math skills through exploration. They also developed a Starfall Parent-Teacher Center that is freely available for everyone and includes supplemental custom worksheets, curriculum downloads, informative guides, all the latest Starfall news and much more for our grownup audience.
Starfall program developed Kindergarten Math, English Lanuage Arts, and Pre-K curricula which are all available for purchase in the Starfall Store, and as downloads in the Parent-Teacher Center. The methodology motivates children in an atmosphere of imagination and play. The teacher-guided and child-directed nature of our curriculum products ensures English language learners and struggling readers learn alongside their peers.

Literacy Online Organization (http://literacyonline.tki.org.nz/) is a site for primary and secondary literacy teachers in New Zealand and internationally. The website also contains images as well as important resources.  It’s mainly focuses on helping primary and secondary teachers develop teaching and learning programmes based on the literacy needs of their learners. On the website it also shows or stored the community mailing list. The community mailing lists provide a connection between teachers and the content of the websites. Satellite social network spaces, such as the VLN Groups and Twitter, offer a choice of connections back to the main community and websites.
Literacy Online Organization website proves the English-medium literacy instructional series support teaching and learning through years 1–8. They include: a). reading materials which are designed to support learning across the curriculum and students’ development of more complex literacy skills; b). targeted materials for students who are not yet meeting literacy expectations. Each series is designed for a specific stage in students’ learning, providing supports and challenges to scaffold their growing understandings, and to prepare them for the next stage in their learning. All series include student and teacher support materials, and many are accompanied by audio versions.
Moreover, the website also has a monthly newsletter on the front page so the community can easily access it. The monthly newsletter provides a summary of the activity across all 5 communities and directs subscribers to new content on the sites.  The principles that strengthen the website are based on 9 goals and objectives. These include: 1). all learners can achieve, 2). content and pedagogical knowledge is essential for effective instruction, 3). knowledge of students’ progressions is critical to meeting students’ diverse needs, 4). students need responsive and personalized instruction, 5).teaching decisions should be based on evidence of students’ strengths and needs,  6). Teaching and learning sequence tasks need to have a clearly defined pedagogical rationale, 7). Teachers’ ongoing inquiry into the impact of their teaching decisions is essential for providing effective differentiated instruction, 8). Ongoing inquiry into underachievement is a key to schooling improvement, 9).  Practice is informed by contemporary research and thinking.

The most important aspect of this website is the Learning about students' needs. The question is what is important (and therefore worth spending time on), given where my students are at? This focusing inquiry establishes a baseline and a direction. The teacher uses all available information to determine what their students have already learned and what they need to learn next. Whether Knowledge of the learner or Knowledge of literacy.

Whooo’s Reading is reading accountability without multiple choice. It is a higher-level thinking alternative to multiple choice. This website can get your students writing about stories that they’ve read.
For teachers, there are 3 main benefits. Main benefit for this website is that you do not need to rely on the multiple choice to know whether the students are reading. Second benefit is accountability. Hold you students accountable with higher-level thinking quizzes. Third benefit is that you can receive automatic scores on written responses.
For students, there are also benefits for them. The first benefit is that it gives students 100% positive reinforcement for reading and writing. Second benefit is that it helps students think critically instead of asking multiple choice questions. Third benefit for students is that students will be able to converse with their peers about the books they’ve read on this website. Students have over 450,000 different texts to choose from. They are able to choose anything that interests them to read. When students read and write about their reading, they earn “Wisdom Coins” to create their Owlvatars.

The activities are easy to differentiate to the needs of each student and are very engaging for students to use. The writing portion which tests the students provides students with a graphic organizer to structure their thoughts and will lead them to explanatory or persuasive writing. Teachers can use this also to gauge their students writing ability.
