International Reading Association Newsletter: Effective Literacy Website #4

            Commonlit (https://www.commonlit.org/) offer resources that are flexible, research-based, aligned to Common Core State standards, and are created by teachers for teachers. Its resources are free and for students in grades 3-12. From various leveled texts of poems, short stories, historical documents filtering can be applied either by grade, theme, genre, etc. Almost all passages have footnotes that include vocabulary words and background information of the text. Teachers can use the rich literacy based resources to plan and implement engaging lessons that aims to assist and improve student’s reading needs within a specific theme. A fast filter can assist to find the leveled passage for student’s reading in one common theme or topic. CommonLit has a reading toolbar that makes it easier to access for students who are reading based on their reading level and ability. Also included are the discussion questions to boost student’s critical thinking about the reading during or after. Such resources surely contribute to building of student’s background knowledge on a specific topic.
