IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #7
Reading Quest (http://www.readingquest.org) is a resource for teachers who wish to engage their students more effectively in the content of their courses, but who also better understand how to support the learning process. It started out as a simple class project under Professor Thomas Estes at the University of Virginia in 1998. It then evolved into a reading and comprehension strategy resource for teachers. It offers teachers not only free and accessible materials, but it also guides them in a way of thinking about teaching that is strategic and student-centered. It is usually mistaken as a resource for Social Studies, but the resources provided could be used for over subjects.
Upon exploring the website, one of the sections provides us with information on the architecture of learning. It explains that learning is a process and depending on the speed of processing a child has, they should be able to process the information that they are learning. We can base the students’ learning by this framework: 1) before students learn anything, you must acquire their prior knowledge and set a purpose for what they will be learning. 2) During the lesson, students will encounter ideas, but it is important for them to get to the point or the purpose of the lesson. 3) After the lesson is given, students need to be given a change to apply them in some way to show what they have learned and now know.
In another section of the website, it shares the strategies that can be used in the classroom, regardless of the content of lesson being taught. Some of these strategies include: ABC Brainstorming, Carousel Brainstorming, Clock Buddies, Column Notes, Compare and Contrast Charts, Graphic Organizers, History Frames/Story Maps, Inquiry Charts, K-W-L, Opinion Proof, Power Thinking, Problem-Solution Chart, Question-Answer Relationship, Questioning the Author, Pattern Puzzles, RAFT Papers, Reciprocal Teaching, Selective Underlining/Highlighting, Semantic Feature Analysis, Story Maps, Summarizing, Thesis-Proof, Think-Pair-Share, Three Minute Pause, 3-2-1, Venn Diagrams, and other vocabulary strategies.
To conclude, I feel that any teacher would benefit from looking through this website. It has descriptions, instructions, and additional resources of many strategies that we teachers can use in our classrooms. If you need a resource that will help your students organize their thinking, then Reading Quest is the way to go!
This course focuses on how to use the Internet for teaching and learning. It helps students develop skills and strategies in integrating the Internet as an essential resource into the curriculum.
