IRA Newsletter Project Effective Literacy Website #6

Read Works (https://www.readworks.org) is website that was created to help solve America’s reading comprehension crisis and student achievement gap. The website is driven by cognitive science research. The website creates world-class content, teacher guidance and integrated tools that improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement. The target audience for the website are students between K-12 across the country.
The first thing that caught my attention when I opened the website was large smile of student that seems to be enjoying the use of the website. This along with numbers that state how many students, educators, schools and countries are using the website. Read Works can be used in 3 different ways. It can be accessed digitally by all users, the teacher can print the content they would like to use or the content can be projected on a smartboard in the classroom. The homepage also passages that can be used for certain subjects being taught in the classroom. The website also states that it can be differentiated to reach every learner; from being less complex, to having audio versions and to support ELL, SPED and struggling readers.
Read Works is a great literacy tool because it can be utilized in different ways in the classroom and at home for students that need more practice. It offers multiple versions of passages that may be needed for different learners. The website is well designed and is easy to navigate through. You’ll just need to create an account for your students and will be able to use the website and the content.
