Newsela is a website that is filled with non-fiction articles that are tailored for
student use. Event articles are categorized by themes: War and Peace, Arts,
Science, Health, Law, and Money. Newsela provides differentiated articles so
there is something for every student (K- 12) and every reading level. For each
article, a quiz to assess reading comprehension is provided. Teachers have
access to real-time results that assess students’ reading comprehension (using multiple
choice questions and short answers).
It
is necessary to create an account in order to access the content on Newsela.
Fortunately, Newsela can be synced with existing Google Classrooms. This way,
teachers can assign students leveled articles based on their ability. Newsela comes equipped with an electronic binder so teachers and students can view the
information and assignments on the website. Teachers also have the option to
print PDFs of the current event articles and distribute a hard copy for
students to review.
Newsela consists of articles from The Washington Post and the LA Times. This website is
a fantastic resource that allows students to stay up to date with current
events happening around the world at reading levels they can understand so as
not to get discouraged with material that is too difficult.
