IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #3
ReadWorks.org is a literacy website that is “committed to solving America’s reading comprehension crisis and student achievement gap.” It creates world class content, teacher guidance, and integrated tools that improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement. It is helping to solve the reading comprehension crisis by bridging the gap between research and practice in reading comprehension instruction. It is currently being used by more than 13 million students, 1 million teachers, 93,000 schools in 172 countries.
Right off the bat, teachers are able to use this website in three ways: digital, print, and projector. With the digital class, you can assess your students progress and automatically grade their work easily. Students are able to highlight, annotate, and complete assignments online. Seeing that the new generation of children are exposed to technology on a daily basis, it is easy for them, as well as fun to do it this way. Also, teachers are able to project the resources using a smart board in the classroom so that it is more interactive with the students. For classrooms that do not have access to technology, teachers are able to print out resources for them and the students to do in the classroom.
With this website, you are able to access multiple contents to teach, such as art, STEM, Social Studies, Literacy Fiction, Poetry, etc. It also differentiates to reach each learner using StepReads, Audio Versions of texts and questions, ELL, and SPED. Another thing that I like with this program is that it implements a ten minute daily activity that helps to build student knowledge, vocabulary, and reading stamina: Article-A-Day.
Overall, I would recommend ReadWorks.org to everyone, due to the fact that it has every resource that any teacher needs for their classroom. It provides reading passages and question sets to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension. It also provides differentiated material to help all learners. I have no doubt that ReadWorks is successful in their mission in solving the reading comprehension crisis.
