IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #1
Reading Rockets (http://www.readingrockets.org/atoz) is a multimedia project that offers many information on how kids learn to read, why there are many struggling readers, and how adults can help their child or students. This project was launched in 2001 and was funded by a major grant from the United States Department of Education and the Office of Special Education Programs. Since then, Reading Rockets has received funding from other foundations and organizations.
The mission of Reading Rockets is an education initiative of WETA, a broadcasting station for public television. It is an ongoing commitment to make learning available to all to educate, inspire and delight through local and national broadcasts and online services.
Reading Rockets creates and disperses free, evidence-based information about reading through three services: PBS programs, online services and professional development opportunities. You can also find Reading Rocket on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest to get updated on the latest research, news, tips, books, interviews with authors and experts, writing contests, literacy events, and so much more.
Reading Rockets has an abundant of useful resources, blogs, articles, shows, classroom strategies, videos and guides for teachers, parents, and administrators. There’s also free webcasts for teacher development. These webcasts offer teachers an opportunity to hear from experts.
I find this website very useful for parents and educators. As a teacher, we are always seeking new ways to teach our students, especially when it comes to reading and writing. This whole website is dedicated for just that. You’re able to hear from professionals and experts on with effective research-based classroom strategies to help build and strengthen literacy skills in all areas of reading and writing.
